Conference: A Civilization Destroyed: The Wealth of Non-Muslims in the Late Ottoman Period and the Early Republican Era
The scientific conference titled “A Civilization Destroyed: The Wealth of non-Muslims in the Late Ottoman Period and the Early Republican Era” organized by the Hrant Dink Foundation with Boğaziçi University, Istanbul Bilgi University and Sabancı University will take place on 20-21 November 2015. The conference will take place at Boğaziçi University, Albert Long Hall and will be broadcast live in Turkish and English on Hrant Dink Foundation’s webpage (www.hrantdink.org). With the participation of numerous academicians both from Turkey and around the world, the conference aims to discuss and understand the history of the expropriation and destruction of the wealth of non-Muslims through nation-building policies of annihilation of minorities and Turkification. The conference will start with the opening speeches by the President of Hrant Dink Foundation, the rectors of Boğaziçi University, İstanbul Bilgi University and Sabancı University and 27 papers will be presented throughout the conference. Historical background, labour mobility and economic activity will be presented in panels; there will be examples from specific regions and groups, legal and religious coercion will be touched on, personal and family accounts will be addressed and cultural losses after the spoliation will be discussed.
